Detached youth work is like most other youth work except that it takes place in the areas which you might identify as your ‘own ground’, basically we come to wherever you choose to hang out. And we will always be on your side!
Here are 5 statements based on the Youth Association's policy that might help you understand a bit more about what detached youth work is.
As a young person, you have the right to gather to use the streets appropriately and sensibly in your leisure time.
Our detached youth workers will help you understand your rights and responsibilities. Our primary focus is you and your needs. We will meet you where you’re at.

You should get to learn from your own experiences through social education; this includes helping you to generate and create relevant experiences from which you can learn.
Our detached youth workers will work with you and other agencies and services when it is in your best interests to receive their support. We can introduce you to people who can help you and we can journey with you in those experiences.

You have the right to challenge appropriately any decisions made by others about your life with which you do not agree and to receive a considered explanation.

You have a right to express an opinion in your community at area, locality and neighbourhood management groups and committees.
Our detached youth workers can support you to do this or advocate on your behalf. We can speak up for you when it seems like no one is listening, and we can help to create opportunities for you to speak for yourself.
